From a scientific point of view, yes. From a recreational point of view, no, but they're nice to have and enhance our lives and are just plain lovable.

Do you think humans need animals for consumption (food resources)?

Most humans could live off bread, water, and maybe some fruit, so no, but what fun and variety meat brings to the table! A nice, juicy hamburger always brightens my day when I'm feeling down - that, or a succulent steak...mmmmmm.
